Making IVF Affordable: Families Push Back Against Staggering Fertility Costs

CHICAGO — For millions of Americans struggling with infertility, in vitro fertilization offers hope — but at a price that puts it out of reach for most families. At tens of thousands of dollars per cycle, with no guarantee of success, IVF remains one of the most financially devastating medical journeys a family can face.
"Because of how much it costs — tens of thousands per cycle — many people simply can't pursue the family they've dreamed of," one patient advocate noted during a recent segment on NBC 5 Chicago.
The average cost of a single IVF cycle in the United States ranges from $12,000 to $25,000, not including medications, which can add another $3,000 to $6,000. Many patients require multiple cycles, driving total costs well above $50,000.
Insurance coverage remains inconsistent. Only a handful of states mandate that insurers cover fertility treatments, leaving millions of patients — particularly those in states without mandates — to bear the full financial burden out of pocket.
Advocates are calling on Congress and state legislatures to pass legislation requiring insurance companies to cover IVF and other fertility treatments. Momentum has grown in recent years, with bipartisan support emerging for measures that would expand access.
Some employers have begun offering fertility benefits as part of their health packages, and nonprofit organizations have emerged to offer grants and financial assistance to families who qualify.
For now, many families are forced to take out loans, drain savings, or forgo treatment altogether — a reality advocates say must change.
